It is not a one-time treatment but is usually repeated at intervals, leading to the formation of a new skin layer which is smoother. Its aim is to improve the youthful appearance of the skin. Microdermabrasion effectively reduces skin imperfections:

  • fine lines and wrinkles

  • hyperpigmentation, age spots and brown spots

  • enlarged pores and blackheads

  • acne and acne scars

  • stretch marks

  • dull-looking skin complexion

  • uneven skin tone and texture

  • melasma

  • sun damage

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure, that exfoliates, oxygenates and strengthens the skin, and additionally stimulates the production of collagen, allowing to effectively get rid of such imperfections as: wrinkles, stretch marks, acne, cellulite, discoloration, and even scars. No wonder - this non-invasive, mechanical micropeeling is able to clearly improve the appearance of our skin and deprive it of its imperfections.

Does microdermabrasion work?

Due to reviews, visible effects and quite affordable price, microdermabrasion is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments.

  1. Microdermabrasion consists in mechanical abrasion of the stratum corneum and deeper layers of the skin using corundum crystals (corundum microdermabrasion) or diamond discs (diamond microdermabrasion), which by rotating remove keratinized layers of the epidermis.

  2. Deep cleansing of the patient's face from impurities (excess sebum, dust, sweat) is the first element of the treatment, then the beautician applies a vacuum head to the skin, which sucks the abrasive epidermis and the crystals used in the treatment.

  3. The beautician properly controls the depth of cleansing and exfoliation of the skin, adjusting it to the individual needs of the patient's skin - including skin type and imperfections.

  4. The treatment instantly smoothes, brightens and cleanses the skin, improves its color and has an anti-aging effect

  5. Interestingly, microdermabrasion facial is a method of exfoliating the epidermis, which can be used not only on the face, but on the whole body surface. Apart from the face, it is usually performed on the cleavage, back and neck. More and more often it is also used so-called water microdermabrasion (hydrabrasion) and oxygen (oxybrasion).

Who should consider microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is somewhat useful for people with dull or sallow skin, mild acne, acne discoloration, pick marks, and very superficial acne scars. Microdermabrasion may be a good treatment option for patients with superficial skin problems and busy lifestyles who are looking for minimal benefits with virtually no side effects or downtime. Individuals with deeper acne scars may expect a much longer series of treatments or likely benefit from physician-performed surgical dermabrasion, chemical peeling or laser resurfacing.

Microdermabrasion benefits

The basic effect of microdermabrasion is its effect on subsequent layers of the epidermis, especially on the deeper ones. This method of cleansing has a positive impact on the functioning of the skin and on its regeneration process. After rubbing off the surface of the epidermis the skin receives a signal that it should rebuild. Cleansed from the keratinized layer, the face also better takes in nutrients. In addition, superficial impurities and disorderly keratinized elements are simply eliminated.

After microdermabrasion treatment, the skin becomes smooth, brightened and, above all, healthier because the synthesis of collagen and elastin is stimulated. By increasing the production of these two components, the skin becomes more elastic.

However, it is worth remembering that the effect of microdermabrasion is not always immediate. Immediately after a visit to the beautician redness may appear, lasting up to three days. If you want to look good on a particular day, it is better to perform the treatment earlier.

Microdermabrasion - indications

Microdermabrasion facial is one of the universal care and cosmetic treatments, because it will work perfectly in many different cases:

  • Dull, tired, devoid of vitality and radiance skin - microdermabrasion perfectly nourishes and oxygenates the skin, making it more radiant, neat and healthy,

  • The progressive process of skin aging - micropeeling will reduce shallow wrinkles and improve skin elasticity, therefore it is especially recommended for those who are struggling with the first signs of aging,

  • Discolorations, scars and stretch marks - this treatment stimulates the production of new collagen, thanks to which the skin on which there are changes will be replaced with healthy tissue over time;

  • Cellulite - thanks to the fact that the epidermis exfoliation treatment improves the blood supply to the skin and helps to fight persistent cellulite;

  • Does microdermabrasion get rid of acne scars? Acne, dilated pores and blackheads - microdermabrasion allows for deep cleansing of the skin pores and unblocking the clogged sebaceous glands, which are the main cause of acne changes.

  • Microdermabrasion is an excellent way to treat acne, scars or stretch marks, but we can also treat it as a preparation for other cosmetic or dermatological treatments - micropeeling enhances the absorption of active ingredients contained in cosmetics or medicinal preparations. For example, vitamin C or hyaluronic acid. It is also recommended to perform microdermabrasion before carrying out treatments with laser, acids or radio waves.

How to prepare for microdermabrasion treatment?

  1. Five days before the treatment, the skin should not be irritated: Do not use exfoliating creams 24 to 72 hours (1 to 3 days) prior to your treatment.

  2. Avoid sun tanning or tanning creams/sprays for at least a week before treatment

  3. You must NOT have recently had laser surgery

  4. Candidates who have had a recent chemical peel or other skin procedure, such as collagen injections, should wait two to three weeks before undergoing microdermabrasion.

  5. Prospective patients should also refrain from waxing or tanning the skin to be treated for a few weeks prior to microdermabrasion treatment.

  6. Wash your face and neck with a non-oily, non-soap based cleanser before each scheduled treatment.

Post - Microdermabrasion Instructions

To maximize microdermabrasion recovery time and results, it is important to follow all post-procedure instruction below:

  • Keep the new skin clean and moisturized

  • Anti-inflammatory creams or cold compresses may be used as necessary

  • Use a gentle cleanser.

  • Trauma such as scratching or picking the treated area should be avoided.

  • It is important to avoid irritating the treated skin with harsh chemicals, rubbing or tanning for one week.

  • Although some peeling may occur in the treated areas, moisturizer should help minimize this effect.

  • Avoid staying in the sun for at least 7 days after the microdermabrasion treatment to prevent UV rays from damaging your skin which slows down the recovery.

  • Patients who absolutely cannot avoid sun exposure should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

  • Do not use glycolic, alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy, benzoyl peroxide or topical acne medications for 24-48 hours following treatment.

What does microdermabrasion do for the Skin?

Microdermabrasion is particularly recommended for people who are struggling with dilated pores and related skin seborrhea, as well as common or blackhead acne. The treatment is also recommended for people suffering from keratinization disorders, having skin discoloration, stretch marks or cellulite. It is perfect for fighting small wrinkles. Due to such a wide application microdermabrasion is very popular.In addition, it is an excellent alternative for people who do not tolerate chemical peeling. What does microdermabrasion give?

  • oxygenates and nourishes the skin;

  • enhances the absorption of active ingredients in cosmetics;

  • improves skin color and elasticity;

  • reduces the visibility of shallow wrinkles;

  • reduces the visibility of discoloration and scars;

  • cleanses and unblocks pores;

  • removes blackheads and reduces symptoms of acne;

  • stimulates the skin to produce collagen;

  • improves blood supply to the skin.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion treatment in a safe, controlled and painless way wipes off the layers of the epidermis to a depth appropriate for a given skin type. Additionally, it stimulates collagen and elastin production. During the procedure there are no age limits and it can be repeated quite often without risk of skin damage.

Chemical peel vs.microdermabrasion

  • Microdermabrasion is a procedure of mechanical exfoliation of superficial skin layers with the possibility of controlling the depth of the epidermis. As a result of performing a single or a series of several microdermabrasion treatments we will obtain the effect of a flexible, regenerated, smooth and healthy skin not only at the level of the epidermis, but also in deeper layers of the skin. As microdermabrasion stimulates the skin to produce new collagen and elastin fibres, it is an ideal anti-aging treatment.

  • The main task of chemical peel is to cleanse the skin of impurities, unblock clogged pores and stimulate the skin to regenerate, which brings the effect of refreshment and oxygenation. After the chemical peel, we can also feel a clear improvement in skin circulation, thanks to the micromassage performed as a result of ultrasound waves vibrations.

Which is better: microdermabrasion or chemical peel? Chemical peel and microdermabrasion are differences not only in the specifics of the two treatments, but also in price. While the price of chemical peel starts from 60 $, we will have to pay more than 80$ for microdermabrasion. We should also remember about the cost of treatments accompanying the peeling of the epidermis, such as nourishing and moisturizing masks, which can further increase the price of the treatment.

How Long Does a Treatment Take?

Usually the whole treatment - each of the above methods - takes about half an hour. During this time the head moves over each point on the face from one to three times. Microdermabrasion should be performed only by well qualified people, do not try to do microdermabrasion at home- it's not safe. Compared to other treatments such as chemical peeling, dermabrasion or laser resurfacing, microdermabrasion is a procedure with minimal complications, does not carry the risk of discoloration and scars, and the effects are visible immediately and can return to normal activity.

How often should you get microdermabrasion?

Usually a series of 2 to 20 treatments should be performed (depending on the indication). On average 5 treatments are performed in a series. The first three every 7-10 days, then every two weeks. The intervals between treatments can be longer, even up to 4 weeks, but it is recommended to perform a series at specific intervals for better effect.

What to expect after microdermabrasion?

After one treatment:

  • your skin looking bright and feeling buttery soft.

After a series of treatments:

  • more skin firmness and elasticity

  • uniformity

  • reduction of dilated pores

  • smoothing out superficial wrinkles

  • removal of discoloration (sunny and/or senile)

  • youthful and healthy looking

Long- term effects of microdermabrasion :

  • improving skin hydration

  • reduction of sun damage

  • visible skin regeneration

Microdermabrasion - contraindications

Although microdermabrasion is considered to be one of the milder procedures carried out in beauty parlours, one should make a careful and responsible decision to perform it. In the case of diamond and corundum microdermabrasion, the most common contraindications include:

  • skin inflammation,

  • various skin diseases such as psoriasis, scarring, skin cancers,

  • bacterial, viral and fungal skin infections,

  • moles,

  • surgical procedures performed in the last two months

  • pimple acne, pusher

  • rosacea

  • eyelid peel

  • laxatives, erosions (damage to the continuity of the skin)

  • skin cancers and pigmented moles

  • extensive cavernous angiomas

In addition, experts recommend that such treatments should be avoided during cold winters and hot months, because immediately after the treatment the skin is weakened, prone to damage and not very resistant to adverse weather conditions.

Microdermabrasion is a treatment suitable for any type of skin with some restrictions depending on the specific type of micropeeling. Microdermabrasion can be performed in younger and older people - this treatment has practically no age limits. Most often it is performed by women over 25 years of age, but more and more often men are also interested in this procedure. It is also liked by women during the menopause, because it quickly gives the effect of radiant, moisturized, smooth and thus younger skin.

Microdermabrasion and pregnancy

There are no contraindications to perform microdermabrasion during pregnancy - micropeeling is safe, non-invasive and completely painless. However, if we want to be sure that the procedure will not harm, it is best to consult a doctor before the treatment.
